Our minds evolved not as survival machines, but as courtship machines, according to Geoffrey Miller. The Neuroscience of the Self

Neurobiologist V.S. Ramachandran tackles the ancient philosophical problem of the self. The Situated Self

The mind does not operate in a vacuum. Social psychologist Philip Zimbardo, drawing on his infamous Stanford Prison Experiment, delivers a sobering lesson on the power of the environment. He argues that situations making a person anonymous and giving permission for aggression will bring out the beast in most people.

Zimbardo debunks the ‘bad apple’ theory used to explain atrocities like the Abu Ghraib scandal. Instead, he points to the ‘bad barrel’ theory: it is not the bad apples, it is the bad barrels that corrupt good people. When horrendous work conditions and external factors combine, they create an evil barrel. You could put virtually anybody in it and get evil behavior. This analysis suggests that personality is less fixed than we believe and is heavily susceptible to situational forces.

Pursuing the Good Life

If the environment can corrupt the mind, how can we cultivate well being? Martin Seligman, the father of positive psychology, explores ‘Eudaemonia,’ the third form of happiness. He distinguishes this from pleasure and positive emotion. Eudaemonia is meaning, achieved by knowing your highest strengths and deploying them in the service of something larger than you are.

Seligman notes there may eventually be a pharmacology of pleasure, but there will never be a pharmacology of meaning. Meaning requires action and connection to a cause beyond oneself. Similarly, Jonathan Haidt examines the connection between emotions, morality, and religious belief. He points out that while secular liberals favor contractual societies, surveys consistently show religious believers are often happier, healthier, and more generous. This suggests that our moral frameworks are deeply tied to our emotional wiring and group dynamics.

The Superiority of the Child

The book concludes with a look at the most powerful learning engines on the planet. Alison Gopnik argues that human babies are the best learning machines in the universe. We have always known they learn, but the mystery was how. Gopnik reveals that babies have innate statistical and numerical skills that far exceed our current artificial technologies.

This raises a second aspect of the Turing Test: given the same information as a human baby, can a computer learn as well and as much? Currently, the answer appears to be no. The mind of a child is superior to our most advanced machines, suggesting there are fundamental principles of intelligence we have yet to decode.
