The Four Agreements
Summary
Drawing on ancient Toltec wisdom, Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements presents a practical guide to personal freedom. Ruiz describes how humans are ‘domesticated’ from childhood by society, parents, and religion. Through a reward-and-punishment system, we internalize a ‘Book of Law’ and a Judge that punish us with guilt and shame when we deviate from the collective dream. This domestication leads us to form agreements with ourselves based on fear and lies, which cause suffering. To break free from this limiting dream and create a new life of happiness, Ruiz suggests adopting four new agreements: Be impeccable with your word; Don’t take anything personally; Don’t make assumptions; and Always do your best. By adopting these codes of conduct, we can deconstruct the old agreements that restrain us, reclaim our personal power, and live a life of love and joy rather than fear and judgment.
